"My work is based on the issue of cosmetics testing. I
am standing from the perspective of both a makeup lover and an animal
lover as well. I was shocked to find out that these cosmetics that I
have been using contain a hidden ingredient, Animal Suffering.
The cosmetics are produce based on cruel
means on the animals. I actually felt ‘betrayed’. As
such I felt the need to express my thoughts and emotions through my
art.
The most common cosmetic test is the Draize eye
irritancy test. A test which involves dropping substances directly into
eye of a conscious rabbit. In a typical test, rabbits are immobilized
with only their head protruding so that they cannot dislodge the
substances with its paw. Rabbits are common victims as it does not have
tear ducts to clean the irritants away. Reactions to substances
include swollen eyelids, inflamed irises, ulceration, massive
deterioration and blindness.
The purpose of this piece of art is not only to
express my thoughts and emotions. But also to let women know the truth
behind their cosmetics. At the same time. I hope more women will
alternatively go for
cruel-free cosmetics."
Collaborating with talented local artists, painters, photographers, print makers and sculptors from Singapore Contemporary Young Artists and Very Special Arts Singapore, Mary Chia is proud to present "iMspiration" - a themed exhibition of 30 art pieces by some of Singapore's most talented homegrown artists.
Through each individual artists' creative expression, each artpiece seeks to capture the multi-facets of a woman's beauty, strength and spirit. Because the complete beauty of a woman is a mirror reflection of what she is within and what she stands for.
So make a note in your calendar and come by NEX Central Atrium between 17 - 21 October for iMspiration Arts Exhibition!
Exhibited artpieces are available for purchase during the exhibition.
Participating artists will donate 30% of the funds raised through the sale of the artpieces towards Very Special Arts Singapore - a not-for-profit charity organization established to support disabled artists by empowering them to support themselves through the sales of their artpieces as well as rehabilitate disabled individuals through exposure to VSA's arts programs.
